Abstrakt / Abstract

The purpose of this article is to reconstruct the history of the first generations of the Śmiłowski family up to the beginning of the 18th century. A compilation of data on their family and property connections would not necessarily take the form of a scientific article, but a wider circle of researchers should be interested in the question of the surnames (and nicknames) used by the members of the family described. It makes it possible to date the formation of peasant surnames in the Duchy of Cieszyn to the first half of the 16th century at the latest, to observe their instability during the 17th century and to find the rules governing this instability, and to see in the Śmiłowskis one of the oldest families still living in this part of Silesia.
