Abstrakt / Abstract

The article presents the genealogy, material status and political views of the peasant family of Pniok from Zamarski near Cieszyn. Almost all men acquired land and married daughters of peasants and smallholders, more rarely of landless peasants. Similarly, their daughters usually married landowners. Paweł Pniok (1816–1879) supported the pro-German party, his sons Paweł (1851–1930) and Józef (1867–1911) – the Catholic wing of the Polish national movement. Both Pawełs were village heads of Zamarsk and their closest family and social circles included village heads of Zamarski and other places in Cieszyn Silesia. This observation may suggest that the introduction of commune local government in the area in 1864, accompanied by partial democratisation, led to the concentration of the main village offices in the hands of rich, closely related peasant families.
